Indications/Uses
Lowers blood glucose level in adults w/ type 2 DM in addition to proper diet, exercise & wt reduction.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 30 mg daily (½ tab). Max: 120 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to gliclazide, other sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides. Patients w/ unstable &/or IDDM, juvenile diabetes (type I diabetes), diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetes pre-coma & coma; serious infection, trauma or surgery; severe liver &/or severe kidney problems. Concomitant use w/ miconazole. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
May cause hypoglycemia. Hyperglycaemia may occur under stress conditions (fever, infection, surgery or trauma). Caution in patients w/ G6PD-deficiency anemia; lactose intolerance; existing or history of liver &/or kidney problems. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Not recommended in childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia; hyperglycemia; viral infection; URTI, runny nose, sore throat, cough; back, muscle & joint pain; headache; high BP; angina (chest pain); leg swelling; diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea; dizziness; skin rash/itching; depression.
Drug Interactions
Do not take w/ miconazole. Possible interaction w/ other antidiabetic agents; antibiotics (sulfonamides/sulfa drugs, clarithromycin); anti-TB drugs; antifungal drugs (fluconazole); NSAIDs, including phenylbutazone; corticosteroids; salicylates (eg, ASA); ACE inhibitors; β-blockers; anticoagulant therapy (blood thinners), including warfarin; diuretics (thiazides, furosemide); fibrates, nicotinic acid; H2-receptor antagonists; MAOIs; chlorpromazine; probenecid; salbutamol, terbutaline, ritodrine; barbiturates (sedatives, anti-seizure medications); OCs (estrogen plus progestogen); danazol; alcohol.
